Soap making is highly addictive and will connect you with a simpler and more natural past. Making your own soap means that you can control the ingredients that go into your soap and produce soap that is both natural and good for your skin.
Soap making dates back thousands of years. 5000 years ago, the Mesopotamian civilization mixed fats with tree ash to produce a basic soap. The ancient Egyptians bathed regularly and they combined animal and vegetable oils with alkaline salts to create a soap like substance for washing.
Ancient Roman legend gave soap its name: From Mount Sapo, where animals were sacrificed, rain washed a mixture of melted animal fats and wood ashes down into the Tiber River below. There, the soapy, sudsy mixture was discovered to be useful for washing clothing and skin. Today with store bought ingredients to make soap – the chemical reaction will be the same reaction that the ancients discovered centuries ago to make soap.
Aleppo in Syria became famous for soap made from Olive and Laurel Oils. Aleppo soap in the Middle East influenced Medieval Europe where Castile Soap made from Olive Oil became one of the most popular high quality natural soaps on the continent.
In this class you will learn how to make your own high quality natural soap. Cold Process Soap making is very popular, but once the soap is made – you will need to let it rest or cure for 4 to 6 weeks.
